Why Should You Take AP English 12?

• You will earn weighted college credit, which helps raise your GPA. Secondly, since many schools weigh your AP course grades to reflect the extra difficulty, a 4.0 in an AP course could become a 4.3 on your transcript. That's a pretty nice boost to your overall GPA.
• If you earn a high score on the AP exam, you can be placed out of freshman English in college.
• Colleges love to see AP courses on transcripts. When admissions officers see AP courses on your transcript, it indicates that you can handle the challenges of college-level coursework.
• You will read a variety of intriguing literature.
• You will improve your writing significantly.
• Small classes with individualized instruction are generally the rule.
• You will become familiar with the pacing of a college course. This will give you a huge advantage in adapting to college life when you become a full time student.
• You will participate in many interactive activities such as Hamlet trials and the annual poetry slam.

Why You Should Take Dual Enrollment English?

• You get 6 college credits for College Composition I and College Composition II in one year that most in-state public institutions will accept.
• Increasingly, more and more out-of-state institutions accept the credits, like Harvard University even. (Note: Check with your target school - UVA does not accept Dual Enrollment as English credit.)
• You save a lot of money! You pay tuition for your credits at Tidewater Community College’s rates (currently $156 per semester), not UVA’s ($2280) or ODU’s ($848).
• There is no national exam to take - only a placement test.
• Small classes with individualized instruction are generally the rule.
• You will become familiar with the pacing of a college course. This will give you a huge advantage in adapting to college life when you become a full time student - your writing skills will also improve tremendously.
• You get your own internet and e-mail account at TCC, so you can even do research from the comfort of your own home.
• There is no summer reading assignment.
• You will be considered a college student with an official ID and everything. You will have all the campus privileges accorded full time students at the TCC campus: library use, discounted movies and free lectures, access to campus bookstore, etc.
• You may never have to take another English course ever again!
• If you have even the slightest interest in this class, please let your guidance counselor know. You will be contacted in the spring to take the placement test administered at Bayside. If you do not pass or take the test, you will need to provide a copy of an SAT verbal score (on both writing and reading) of 500 or higher, an ACT combined score of 21 or higher on both reading and writing.
